The new house is designed around maximising views and outlook over the open country side whilst providing protection from the weather (in particular strong south westerly winds).

This is achieved by creating a protective wall on the south west corner to form a courtyard space between the boundary (and weather) and the new house. This wall is ‘permeable’ with louvred openings, clear openings and pedestrian routes through. The main vertical circulation and living space look into this courtyard which provides a place of contemplation and protection.

The living accommodation is situated on the first floor, with bedrooms on the ground floor opening into a protected garden. A strong connection to external spaces is evident throughout the house.

A simple palette of contemporary materials will be used to complement the thick gabion walls.
